Our most precious gift is our own state of being.

Franciscan Priest, Richard Rohr, writes that  what we are waiting for to come at Christmas is the Cosmic Christ not some baby. As Rohr points out, but few people understand:

"The historical Jesus was one man, and Christ is not his last name. The Christ includes the whole sweep of creation and history joined with him - and you too. We call this the Cosmic Christ. We ourselves are a member of the Body of Christ and the Cosmic Christ, even though we are not the historical Jesus."

Kind of sounds like the interdependent web of all existence of which each of us and everything is a part.

And so what is it that each of us is hoping for, yearning for, desiring this Christmas and throughout the new year?

I am waiting for justice, and truth, and beauty, and grace. Will it magically appear like gifts from Santa under the Christmas tree? I think I have to be more like Santa's elves and make some of it so it can be shared with all the people of the world.

Rohr quotes Luke 10:22 where Jesus says, "No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

We all are sons and daughters of the Spirit of Life, the Father and Mother of Life. We all reveal parts of who the Son is to each other. As Stephen Gaskin said one time, in the last analysis, the only thing we have to offer another human being is our own state of being.

What is your state of being? That is your gift to me and to others this Christmas.

At the Brockport Unitarian Universalist Fellowship we are building a hopeful community that yearns for justice, peace, truth, beauty, and grace. We share these spiritual gifts with each other every time we gather. Join us and see what is revealed.

  1. Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit. Aren't you a shiny, rose colored glasses wearing, liberal who probably believes in socialism. I'll bet you even drink latees and drive a Volvo don't you?
