My Kind Of Church Music - Holy Now, Peter Mayer

I went to church yesterday, Sunday, 02/15/15, with my friend Don and it was a wonderful service partly because John Akers played and sang Peter Mayer's great song, Holy Now.

  2. It is interesting how the lyrics in this song describe a maturing religious understanding that moves from what James Fowler names as stage 3 to stage 4 or 5. This song could be used as part of religious education program exemplifying this developmental model.

    Thanks for posting it.

  3. I remember a Cannon Law being passed in the Catholic church in the late 80s or early 90s by Pope John Paul the II which stated that live music was to be preferred to recorded music if at all possible. I am pleased to learn that Mr. Akers was able to play and sing Mr. Mayer's song live rather than play a recording of it. I'll bet it was very moving and inspiring. If I am in Rochester I would like to pay a visit to First Universalist. It seems like there are talented people there.

  4. Dear Ryan:

I think that song would appeal more to people who have come to UU from a Christian liturgical background like Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, etc.

It is a great song and I agree with Pope John Paul II that bad live music is better than excellent recorded music any time for worship.
