I am not sure whe...I think you are on to something. I am not sure whether Guengerich's ethic of gratitude is the ethical "law of gravity" he is looking for. I think you put your finger on it with "forgiveness" being the law of gravity that should inform our ethics.<br /><br />As Kurt Vonnegut pointed out in his commencement address at Agnes Scott College in Decatur Georgia in May of 1999 the Code of Hammurabi, the old "eye for an eye, and tooth for a tooth" which has fueled human societies for millenia is undated since the time of Jesus and Buddha who both taught that forgiveness and detachment are the way.<br /><br />So the only way to love our enemies is to forgive them and ourselves and with that we can be grateful.Aaron Davidsonnoreply@blogger.com
