The Brockport Unitarian Universalist Fellowship had a wonderful service today. Rev. Peggy Meeker preached about the fifth source "Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of mind and spirit."
Rev. Meeker talked about Fannie Barrier Williams who was raised in Brockport, NY and advocated for African American Women. She is buried in Brockport at the High Street Cemetery.
The fifth source matches will with the fourth principle, the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
Increasingly, it seems, in our modern age we see a lot of irresponsibility especially from religious fundamentalists who deny our scientific knowledge in favor of ideological teachings based on literal readings of what they consider to be the revealed truth of what they believe to be their god.
The god I understand is not afraid of the truth or of science. This god which I call Life loves science and accurate understandings of the world within and without. Religion and science are not in conflict but in synchrony with each other.
At the Brockport Unitarian Universalist Fellowship we admire and appreciate science as a way of knowing and accept it as very compatible with our religious faith. It is our belief that we would have a better world if other people would join us in our appreciation of what science has given us.
An online magazine of faith based on a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. The mission of Unitarian Universalism: A Way Of Life ministries is to provide information, teach skills, and clarify values to facilitate the evolutionary development of increasingly higher levels of spiritual development for human beings around the world.
