From The Week, Good News newsletter, 04/18/19

7-Eleven owner shows shoplifter compassion after finding out why he's stealing
When the owner of a 7-Eleven in Toledo, Ohio, learned that a young shoplifter was stealing in order to feed his family, he did something unexpected. Instead of turning him over to the police, Jay Singh filled a bag up with food, and gave it to the teenager to take home. "He's a young kid," Singh said. "That will go on his record that he was a thief. He cannot do anything in his life. He will not get a good job. This will not solve his hunger problem." Singh said in Indian culture, it's important to feed a person when they are hungry, and he felt it was his duty to help. [CBS News]

Editor's note:
It is interesting to note the courageous and brave people who step in to help others. What is it about us that is so altruistic that we are willing to sacrifice our own safety and well being to help others? Is this tendency more likely to manfest in some people than others?

Unitarian Universalists covenant together to affirm and promote seven principles, principles which support empathic, compassionate, helping behaviors.

Fred Rogers said that his mother told him in the times of trouble to look for the helpers. Where to look? One place is among the Unitarian Universalists.

Fred Rogers - Look for the helpers

Editor's note:
Mr. Rogers is referring to emergency response personnel or people who respond in a crisis. On UU A Way Of Life ministries we have expanded the definition of "the helpers" as people who have committed themselves to making the world a better place in a sustained and on-going way.

"Helpers" come in many forms and they have one thing in common: the betterment of human beings and life on the planet.

The Helpers - Attorney Benjamin Crump

Attorney Benjamin Crump is on the front cover of Sojourners February, 2018 issue.

"This has become the African-American family emergency plan—set in motion when the “hurricane” is a white person with a gun. Call Benjamin Crump.

This is what Trayvon Martin’s family did in 2012 when they realized the criminal justice system would not punish the man who killed Trayvon. They called the lawyer who once stood on the steps of a courthouse where two white men had just been acquitted of beating to death a 14-year-old boy and said: “You kill a dog, you go to jail. You kill a little black boy, and nothing happens.” They called the attorney who, time and time again, tries to make something happen. They called Benjamin Crump.
In Trayvon’s case, Crump, one of the best-known civil rights attorneys practicing today, thought at first that something would happen without his help—since the only thing Martin had in his possession when George Zimmerman shot and killed him was a can of fruit juice and a bag of Skittles. When Crump realized there was a strong possibility that justice would not be served, he came face-to-face with what he calls “a test from God.”

The Helpers - Dr. Anne Hallward

Psychiatrist Dr. Anne Hallward is interviewed in the January, 2019 issue of The Sun magazine. She is one of the helpers.

Dr. Hallward mentions Robin Diangelo's book White Fragility in answer to one of the questions she is asked about cultural bias.

Amoroso: Do you feel ashamed of your own cultural bias?
Hallward: Sometimes, yes. You know the truism: we always teach what we most need to learn. I’m ignorant in so many ways. I have blind spots shaped by racism, classism, elitism, straight privilege, and so on. But I trust myself to see my bias when it’s pointed out to me, to acknowledge it, to learn what I need to learn, and to undo it where I can. Punishing myself does not help. White people’s fear of being seen as bad — what Robin DiAngelo calls “white fragility” — fosters avoidance of the topic and therefore contributes to racism.
",,,avoidance of the topic ...contributes to racism."
Unitarian Univeralists covenant together to affirm and promote the free and responsible search for truth and meaning. When white UUs apply this principle to the topic of racism they are less fragile than they might have been. Learning about the beliefs, values, and practices of white fragility helps sanctify the world and help people become holy.

The Helpers - UPS Foundation Disaster Relief

From the Harvard Business Review, Jan-Feb 2019, p.20

"One of the biggest needs after a disaster is logistics—getting food, water, medicine, and other supplies to the affected region. UPS has leveraged its expertise to become a leader in the field, routinely winning awards for its contributions around the world. Eduardo Martinez, the president of the UPS Foundation and UPS’s chief diversity and inclusion officer, spoke with HBR about how the company maximizes the benefits of its work. "

How has technology changed the way you respond? It helps us be more effective. We have used drones to deliver vaccines and blood supplies in Rwanda, sometimes making more than 50 deliveries a day. We’re using scanners and cards to track and distribute food to Syrian refugees. Before that, pen and paper were being used to track distributions to camps with 200,000 people. The new system ensures that everyone gets the right nutrition, and it has reduced lines, spoilage, hoarding, and reselling.

The helpers - What do helpers do?

"May I become at all times, both now and forever,
a protector for those without protection
a guide for those who have lost their way
a ship for those with oceans to cross
a bridge for those with rivers to cross
a sanctuary for those in danger
a lamp for those who need light
a place of refuge for those needing shelter
and a servant to all those in need."
—Shantideva, 8th Century Buddhist at Nalanda University in Bihar, India
