One of the programs of UU A Way Of Life ministries is "Stewards of the Earth." There are several activities of which two are planting trees on Arbor Day and encouraging community gardening.
Here is a wonderful video about the Beacon Food Forest which is over 5 acres of permaculture on city land about 2 1/2 miles from downtown Seattle.
Community gardening projects are not just about growing healthy food, but also about teaching important skills in horticulture and using this activity as a form of community building as people from different parts of the community work together on a common goal.
