My Kind of Church Music, In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins

The lies, the deceit, the betrayal, tragedy, death. It's in the air.

What will save you? Faith. Faith my friend. Faith that it all comes out in the wash and the world after it is all said and done is a benevolent and not a malevolent place. It is after all about love. But when love fails?

In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord
I've been waiting for this moment, all my life, Oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord

Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off the grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord
I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, Oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment all my life, Oh Lord, Oh Lord

Well I remember, I remember don't worry
How could I ever forget, it's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, no you don't fool me
The hurt doesn't show; but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you or me

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord...

Dave, your ability to find spiritual themes in pop culture is delightful. It is one of the things I really enjoy about your blog. Keep up the good work.

  3. The urban legends say that Phil Collings wrote this song when he was going through a divorce. Another story is that he witnessed a drowning. Phil himself supposedly said he is not sure where the song came from, the spirit just moved him.

Isn't that what happens often when we are in tune with the muses?

  4. I am starting a new category on the blog which I am calling spiritual themes in pop culture. If you have ideas and observations about aspects of pop culture which depict or describe spiritual themes please refer them to me.

    Thanks for all your comments.

  5. Do UUs believe in prophesy and reading the signs of the times?

  6. UUs don't believe in much of anything as far as I know. If you mean do UUs believe in biblical prophesy and revelations and end times and all that nonsense. No. I don't most of them do. Only dim witted, demented Christian nut cases believe that stuff.

  7. As someone working in the interfaith community for nearly 30 years I would have to say that UUs DO in fact believe in a wide variety of religious and spiritual beliefs. I think that many UUs don't share publically what's deep down inside as much as maybe the Evangelicals or Conservative brance of Christian churches. The uniqueness of UU I believe is the ONE-ness of God.. not a trinitarian faith. But within the UU congregation could be people who take religiousity from not only the Abrahamic faiths (Judiasim, Christianty & Islam), but of the Eastern faiths, Buddhistm, Hindusim, and such. That's my nickles worth...
