Standing on each others shoulders

"I wish I could live for a long time so that one day I may know how to explain it; if I am not granted that wish, well, then somebody else will perhaps do it, carry on from where my life has been cut short. And that is why I must try to live a good and faithful life to my last beath; so that those who come after do not have to start all over again, need not face the same difficulties. Isn't that doing something for future generations?"

Etty Hillsesum, An Interrrupted Life

Except when it comes to war we do the same stupid things over and over again. I thought that after Viet Nam we, Americans, would have learned. But we didn't and haven't as far as I can tell or maybe some of us have but most of us haven't. When will we ever learn?
