Growing Old, a poem, by Cindy Perotti

Cindy Perotti(Marlowe), a Brockport High School graduate of 1976, is a 53 year old mother of two grown children, Jenna who is 28, and Chuck who is 29. Jenna works as a dietary aid in a nursing home where they are having a contest for poetry describing older age. Jenna asked Cindy to write a poem for her and what you read below, Cindy wrote for Jenna and  has generously agreed to share with us on UU A Way Of Life.

Getting Old
by Cindy Perotti

Worked all my life to get to this point.
Alone I look in the mirror, and wonder will my future be as good as my past.
Old is the place I find myself today.
All my experiences, wants, and desires are as with me today, as they were yesterday, and will be tomorrow.

Here are five points you should know:
  1. I lost my mind.
  2. I have trouble seeing things.
  3. I can't hear.
  4. I can't speak or taste.
  5. My arms, legs, and heart can't feel or touch.
Also there are 2 questions I ask and answer:
1. Question: What's happening? Answer: Getting old.
2. Question: What can I do? Answer: Not much.

Here's what I have to say now, is good bye, and smooth sailing until I meet again, and keep your chin up and have a blast, and don't give up because it's not all that bad.
So long for now.
May God bless you in this process.

  1. Great poem. Thanks for sharing it.

  2. I love Cindy's poem. She captures the suffering of old age and yet conveys an optimism and hope that is encouraging and comforting.

    Thanks for sharing it.

  3. Ms. Perotti's poem touched me. I am caring for my elderly mother and her memory is going and it is frustrating and scary for me somedays but I like the way the poem ends with what can I do? not much, well smooth sailing, keep your chin up, etc.

Very good, very hopeful in spite of all the loses she mentions.

  4. I am in fact happy to read this blog posts which consists of tons of useful data,
