Prophetic voices and events - Feast of Epiphany

Today, January 7, 2018, is the Epiphany. For much of the Christian church it is a day of gift giving because it is the day the Three Kings wound up in Bethlehem with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

It is usually thought of as the 12th day after the birth of Jesus. Some churches celebrate it the first Sunday after the 12th day of Christmas. This year, in the Roman Catholic church, Epiphany Sunday, is celebrated today.

Epiphany is a feast that celebrates internationalism. We are reminded that Jesus came for all people from all nations and all classes. This meaning of the feast is something that is badly needed in our current values of xenophobia and "me first" trumpeted by Trumpism in the U.S.

  1. Jesus came for the whole world. You'd think the Trumpists would get this. Immigrants make us stronger as a nation not weaker. Trump and his supporters are mistaken and hopefully will come to see the value in welcoming the stranger.

  2. Epiphany is a wonderful feast day. I wish it was celebrated more actively around the world and especially in my community. It helps remind us what the gift giving ritual is really about, to pay honor to the recipient. It's not about the money or excitement or pleasing the recipient. It's about honoring them and our relationship with them.
