What ultimately are we afraid of?

Corrective learning always begins with the awakening of spirit, and the turning away from the belief in physical sight. This often entails fear, because you are afraid of what your spiritual sight will show you. I said before that the Holy Spirit cannot see error, and is capable only of looking beyond it to the defense of Atonement. There is no doubt that this may produce discomfort, yet the discomfort is not the final outcome of the perception. When the Holy Spirit is permitted to look upon the defilement of the altar, He also looks immediately toward the Atonement. Nothing He perceives can induce fear. Everything that results from spiritual awareness is merely channelized toward correction. Discomfort is aroused only to bring the need for correction into awareness.T-2.V.7:1-8

A Course in Miracles . Foundation for Inner Peace. Kindle Edition.

A Course In Miracles, if taken seriously, will frighten the hell out of people. Why? Because it is a mind training course that suggests that a person give up their ego and surrender to the will of God.

In Alcoholics Anonymous it is suggested, in step three, that we make a decision to turn our willfulness over to the will of God. When considering this suggestion, resistance arises which is extremely powerful and blocks, if not rejects, this suggestion. Only when people hit bottom do they consider the idea that their lives, on their own, are unmanageable and that there is a better way.

In Unitarian Universalism, people join together to affirm and promote the free and responsible search of truth and meaning. This truth and meaning is to be found within the life of the spirit in the mind not in the external world of the ego.

Today, it is suggested that we recognize and acknowledge our fear of the dissolution of our egos. How do we manage this fear? With growing faith in the unconditional love of our Transcendent Source. It is with this faith that we can master our ultimate fear.
