From whence does self knowledge come?

Osho says, "Self-knowledge is the only knowledge there is. What possible value could there be in those who do not know themselves, knowing anything else?"

We are not our egos. We are not our bodies, our personalities, our thoughts, our emotions, our social status. So who are we?

In A Course In Miracles it is taught that we are the decision maker. We are that part of ourselves that can choose between the ego and Love. We get to choose every moment of every day.

Listen for the faint wisp of Love's melody, as Ken Wapnick puts it, that is behind everything.

When we join together to listen and extend our awareness together of the hum of the universe we become aware of who we really are.

Do you hear what I hear?

Unitarian Univeralists covenant together to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person. What is important in this principle is not "every person" but "worth and dignity." And we can wonder from whence does this "worth and dignity" come? It is from this place of worth and dignity that self knowledge comes.

Today's lesson - Give up attack thoughts

Are you a pessimist or an optimist?

Do you expect good things to happen or bad?

We make our own reality by the thoughts we project. What we think we see we get.

"Be careful what you wish for," the admonition tells us.

"We bring our fears to us by fearing them," another admonition tells us.

Psychologists call this phenomenon a "self fulfilling prophecy," and a "psychological set," and biases.

In Alcoholics Anonymous they call it "stinking thinking."

While we have no contol over the cirumstances in our lives, we can control our response to them.

And so, today's lesson from A Course In Miracles, says, "I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts."

It is written in this lesson, "The world you see is a vengeful world, and everything in it is a symbol of vengeance. Each of your perceptions of 'external reality' is a pcitorial representation of your own attack thoughts. Once can well ask if this can be called seeing. Is not fantasy a better word for such a process, and hallucination a more appropriate term for the result?" Lesson 23.3:1-4

Today, we are asked to give up our attack thoughts and just relax in the quiet of an awareness with no thoughts. Clear your mind of garbage and simply be here now.

As the day goes on we can remind ourselves go give up judgment and just be present listening for the faint wisp of melody of God's Love.

Ask Alexa - Why does my past haunt me?

Alexa: Why does my past haunt me?

That was then and this is now and would you have what you remember of the past form your future, all of which is illusionary, or would you chose to appreciate what is here now in the present?

If you don't find what you are looking for, choose again.

Osho says, "Truth is one, but the doors to find it can be many. And if you become attached to the door itself, you will stop at the door. Then the door of truth will never open for you."

Osho's statement reminds me of the bar card which says, "If you think you know what you are talking about you are full of shit."

Unitarian Universalists know that truth does not reside in a creed or a book or a tradition. These things can point to the truth, but they are not the truth. That's why UUs covenant together to affirm and promote the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.

Many UUs, if not most, were raised in different faiths and in searching in UU, they did not lose their faith but someone else's. They are searching for their own, maybe for the first time in their lives.

Unitarian Univeralism is a faith of second chances. Unitarian Univeralism supports our search wherever it may take us and if we wind up going down a blind alley which becomes a dead end, UU encourages us to choose again.

Ask Alexa - I keep making the same mistakes and don't know what to do?

Alexa: My life is a mess and I keep making the same mistakes over and over and over again to the place where I am really discouraged and I don't know what to do?

Ask your Higher Power, whatever you conceive your Higher Power to be, to guide you and choose again.

The Helpers - Attorney Benjamin Crump

Attorney Benjamin Crump is on the front cover of Sojourners February, 2018 issue.

"This has become the African-American family emergency plan—set in motion when the “hurricane” is a white person with a gun. Call Benjamin Crump.

This is what Trayvon Martin’s family did in 2012 when they realized the criminal justice system would not punish the man who killed Trayvon. They called the lawyer who once stood on the steps of a courthouse where two white men had just been acquitted of beating to death a 14-year-old boy and said: “You kill a dog, you go to jail. You kill a little black boy, and nothing happens.” They called the attorney who, time and time again, tries to make something happen. They called Benjamin Crump.
In Trayvon’s case, Crump, one of the best-known civil rights attorneys practicing today, thought at first that something would happen without his help—since the only thing Martin had in his possession when George Zimmerman shot and killed him was a can of fruit juice and a bag of Skittles. When Crump realized there was a strong possibility that justice would not be served, he came face-to-face with what he calls “a test from God.”
