Religion in the public square - The moral corruption of America on Memorial Day 2020

TOP 10 MORAL CORRUPTION QUOTES | A-Z Quotes

The moral corruption of America

When the virus came here, it found a country with serious underlying conditions, and it exploited them ruthlessly. Chronic ills—a corrupt political class, a sclerotic bureaucracy, a heartless economy, a divided and distracted public—had gone untreated for years. We had learned to live, uncomfortably, with the symptoms. It took the scale and intimacy of a pandemic to expose their severity—to shock Americans with the recognition that we are in the high-risk category.

The crisis demanded a response that was swift, rational, and collective. The United States reacted instead like Pakistan or Belarus—like a country with shoddy infrastructure and a dysfunctional government whose leaders were too corrupt or stupid to head off mass suffering.

George Packer, Underlying Conditions, The Atlantic, June 2020, p. 9

Those with eyes to see and ears to hear have seen and heard the collapse of the American democracy coming. There were signs all over the place; the immoral wars in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the war crimes of torture, Abu Ghraib, Guantonamo, the growing income and wealth inequality, police violence, mass incarceration of minority populations, Citizens united, corporate and mercenary health care for profit, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, media illiteracy, lack of educational opportunities, child care, job training,  and the list goes on and on.

In themselves these signs and symptoms could be dealt with and minimized if not eradicated, but systematically ensconced in a mean spirited social contract, they have continued to weaken us, separate us, divide us, and brought us to national collapse.

The Trump administration is not the problem with its lies, corruption, racism, cruelty, bullying, and sycophancy but rather a flowering in the moral soil which has nurtured and brought these political leaders to power.

We, the American people, have done this to ourselves and we have no one else to blame. Our hubris, arrogance, greediness, and militarism has ironically made us brittle, fragile, and on the verge of collapse. It didn’t take much to tip the house of cards over the edge into the abyss of destruction.

And here we are - having made our own bed, we have to lie and die in it.

Will the current crisis be enough to bring us to our senses or will more pain and suffering be necessary? Predictions are that the next six months things will only get worse because the majority of Americans still haven’t learned the lessons that Mother Nature is trying to teach.

Unitariann Univeralists know the answers which are embodied in their seven principles but they are a small voice pissing the ocean and farting into a hurricane, and they have a tendency to be too nice not wanting to speak the truth if it would offend anyone, and the truth offends the majority of Americans who voted to Make America Great Again.

America is a failed state supported by a failed people who have lost their moral compass. They have bought into Capitalism and the worship of the Almighty Dollar and the demonization of their brothers and sisters upon whom to project their fear, anger, resentment, and grievance. They have elected corrupt people into office to represent them based on their corrupt values and principles.

The great American way has always been about the money and competing and screwing the next person to get a little bigger share of the pie. The people who have won at this game are the ones we admire, the ones we vote for and support, the ones we want to be associated with. What America needs at this point is a miraculous change of heart and it doesn’t seem that they are ready for it yet.

How can UUs help America get ready to embark on a better way? By teaching people that better choices are available and helping to change the incentives so that people will be more inclined collectively to do the right thing. A good place to start, is simply with the truth, and the truth is, that we have sinned. We cannot be forgiven and rectify the mistakes if we cannot name the sin. What America’s sins have most affected you and your family and friends? Can you name them? Where can you start? What is one thing you could do today to improve the moral environment in your family, your neighborhood, your community, your state, your country, the planet? Start where you are.

On Memorial Day we are encouraged to fetichize our military exploits. Let's use this opportunity to do a life review and consider where our military might has actually gotten us. This review, if done honestly, will make you cry not so much for those who have been needlessly killed but for the insanity of our behavior.

Religion in the public square - What is a UU to do about the impeachment of Donald J. Trump?

As we watch the impeachment trial in the United States Senate unfold of President Donald John Trump, we can only wonder whether the Republican Senators will act in a fair and just way or whether they will act in an unfair and unjust way to obtain some personal benefit.

Unitarian Universalists covenant together to affirm and promote justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.

The House of Representatives has decided that President Trump has committed impeachable offenses against the American people as measured against the standards of the constitution of the United States. This decision has been made along party lines with Democrats deciding the President has committed impeachable acts and the Republicans have decided he hasn't.

Which side is right? Where is the truth? This decision about the truth of the allegations will be determined by the evidence. The evidence clearly demonstrates that the behavior was engaged in and the offenses were committed.

The facts are not in dispute, only the interpretation of what the facts mean, and what is to be done about the harm that is alleged to have occurred and continues to occur.

To what extent are denial, minimization, displacement, projection, and rationalization unfair and unjust? These defense mechanisms are permitted in America's adversarial criminal justice system. These defense mechanisms are permitted even if the use of them leads to a false and unfair conclusion.

The problem of justice and fairness is not resolved by siding with one or the other sides of the disgreement and conflict. The problem can only be resolved by questioning the system of adjudication itself.

The problem is not Donald Trump's behavior but the harm that has been done to the democratic institutions and credibility of the U.S. government and the impact on U.S. relationships with its allies and its reputation and credibility around the world.

A constructive adjudication of the charges is not obtained by the congressional conflicted parties but by the offender and the people harmed. What is the harm that Donld Trump's behavior has had on the integrity of the democratic instituions which the American people governed by these institutions have come to depend on? What is the harm that has been done to American's allies. Once this harm is assessed and agreed to, then a plan to repair the harm can be developed.

With Donald Trump's refusal to take responsibility for the harm that has been done, there is little hope that repair of that harm will be attempted by he and his administration. It will be left for others and the best that can be done is that the powers that enabled the perpetration of the injustice to begin with be stripped away from the perpetrator.

In reflecting on this situation of impeachment of Donald Trump which option seems to be the fairest and the most just?

A. Donald Trump is acquitted by the Senate and continues in office.
B. Donald Trump is found culpable and his behavior is censured.
C. Donald Trump is found culpable and is removed from office.
D. The matter is swept under the rug and the American people forget about it.
E. The Senate acquits and citizens become more actively involved in their democracy to advocate for fairness and justice in their political processes.
F. Other _______________________________________-----

What, if anything, should a good Unitarian Univeralist do in regards to this impeachment of President Trump and the harm that has been done to the American people, its allies, and all the people around the world?

Religion In The Public Square - Pope Francis advocates for peace building not war

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Concern about the growing tensions between the United States and Iran has been bubbling within the Vatican, as Pope Francis and high-ranking prelates urge global leaders to employ self-restraint and dialogue.
“Dear brothers and sisters, in many parts of the world there is a terrible feeling of tension in the air,” Pope Francis told the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square after his Angelus prayer on Sunday (Jan. 5).
“War brings only death and destruction,” he continued. “I call upon all parties involved to fan the flame of dialogue and self-control, and to banish the shadow of enmity.”
Though Francis did not refer directly to Iran or the United States, the timing of his words coincided with the rising hostility between the two countries, which led Vatican observers to view the pope’s words as a direct appeal to the two parties in question.

Here at UU A Way Of Life, we remind Unitarian Univeralists that we covenant together to affirm and promote the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. We at UU A Way Of Life will do everything we can to prevent escalation of war and work for peaceful resolutions to internation conflicts and disagreements. A focus of these efforts is supporting political candidates who are peace builders and not war hawks.

Religion in the public square - Future for religion in the coming decade of the 20s

What will become of religion in the coming decade? For a sweeping consideration click here.

What will happen to Unitarian Universalism in the next decade? Here are some guesses:

  1. It's membership will remain stagnant if not decline further as its older congregants die off.
  2. If Unitarian Universalism is to survive it must rejuvenate its theology and focus more on its convenantal model and its seven principles. However, this is unlikely to happen because it's governance structure is too weak to provide clear, decisive, and effective leadership.
  3. The recognition of Universalism will grow, but its main growth will occur outside the denomination.
  4. The liberal ethos of Unitarian Universalism will continue to grow and spead with an inclination towards more, not less, inclusivity in the broader society.
  5. There will be an increase in "nones" on surveys of denominational identification with the further trend of people saying they are "spiritual" but not "religious."
  6. There will be a need for a greater focus on helping people develop a spiritual life instead of social justice, but Unitarian Universalism will miss this opportunity and people searching for this assistance will find it elsewhere.
  7. While there will be a decrease in quanity of people who say they are UU, there will be an increase in quality of the membership with remaining members taking the faith more seriously and making it a daily part of their lives.

Religion in the public square - Pope decries "walls of indifference" migrants face in new lands

Pope Francis, in his Christmas message on 12/15/19, criticized the "wall of indifference" that migrants face trying to escape war, poverty, and political violence.

The United States, under Trumpism, have not only put up wall of indifference but have perpetrated abuse and injustice on those who seek a better life among us in the United States.

Will people of faith rise up to undo the further injustice perpetrated by the United States on our brothers and sisters who seek a better life among us?

As Unitarian Universalists can we join with Pope Francis by affirming and promoting our principles of inherent worth and dignity of all people; justice, equity, and compassion in human relations; and the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all?
